Victor Monsiváis: Guitar/Vocals
John Fletcher: Guitar
Abbey Sholzberg: Double Bass
the Victor Monsivais Trio has been performing in the G.T.A. for over two decades in all kinds of events and venues; including the legendary Rex Hotel, the Reservoir Lounge, the Gladstone Hotel, Gate 403, The Lula lounge; and for the last ten summers, the Trio has been selected to perform in the Toronto Jazz Festival Club Series.
The ensemble consists of band leader Victor Monsivais: vocalist, composer, and arranger, who sings all songs in their original languages and plays the guitar, with the true Swing, Bossa and Latin beats; John Fletcher, whose extensive experience as a big band player brings to the ensemble a unique sound, both in comping and soloig; and bassist Abbey Sholzberg, who delivers deep toned bass lines with precise timing, as well as creative solos.
The trio’s Jazz repertoire draws from the greatest composers such as Monk, Ellington or Van Heusen; but they also play Brazilian composers Jobim, Mendoça and Barroso; and Latin icons, such as Consuelo Valazquez and Beny More; as well as Monsivais’ own compositions.
the Victor Monsivais Trio’s musicians achieve, apparently effortlessly, the swing groove which invokes that indescribable mood and romance that reminisce a Manhattan evening in the fifties, when they perform jazz standards. The rarely heard hard-smooth Brazilian rhythm and harmonies, that recreate the aura of "alegría & saudade" of a quiet night in Copacabana, when they do Bossa. And when the Trio preforms Latin music, they bring out the sensual rhythms and sounds, which carry the listener to a hot evening Tropicana session in Havana.
